Mequon, WI – Mequon-based Shaffer Development announced today that Beans & Barley will be joining Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. and Purple Door at the Mequon Public Market at Spur 16.
The current owners are James Neumeyer and Polly Kaplan. James started at Beans & Barley in 2000 as a dishwasher and later worked as a line cook, hot deli cook and kitchen manager. Polly started in 1994 as a barista and waitress becoming a manager in 1999. Both bought into the business in 2012 replacing Pat Sturgis and Patty Garrigan. In 2017 Lynn Sbonik (who was an owner for 40 years) and Peg Silvestrini (who owned for 25 years) retired.
Beans & Barley started on Murray Ave in 1973 by Michael Stevens as a small health food store. In 1979 the store moved to North Ave and included a restaurant. A fire destroyed that building on June 28th, 1993 and the current location reopened on that site late in 1994. Beans & Barley has been owned by 8 different people in various configurations.
According to Polly "Beans & Barley has always been about fresh food, made from scratch but it is really so much more. It is a community of customers and employees who are invested in seeing "their place" thrive. We have survived fires, corporate competition and sink holes all because we care about the food we serve and the friends we make. We are really looking forward to working with the other vendors in the Market Place."
Jim stated "I was so happy to hear about the green building and amazing vendors heading into Spur 16, they are all businesses that complement each other and some we are partners with already. Can't wait to team up with them at the Public Market and meet our new neighbors in Mequon. "
Mequon Public Market at Spur 16 is located at 6300 West Mequon Road and will be next door to the recently announced St. Paul Seafood Company who is also part of the Spur 16 Development. St. Paul Seafood Company will have a fish market, oyster bar and sit-down restaurant. The Mequon Public Market at Spur 16 will have approximately 10 vendors.
According to Cindy Shaffer, owner of Shaffer Development, LLC construction is well underway on the project. We are planning to open in the fall of this year. 10 town homes will be completed in January of 2019 and 146 apartments in three buildings will be completed in the spring and summer of 2019. “We have had a great response from people who love the idea of living in such a walkable community with amenities that have not been available in this area before.” Spur 16 is offering a host of services that include, meal delivery from the market, pet walking, package delivery, grocery shopping, cleaning and smart units that will enable tenants to control lights, temperature, music and emergency services. We have trademarked the term “smart unit” and are excited to introduce this concept. Our pool and club house will serve as a gathering space with a community kitchen and event space. We will have community bikes, so our residents and guests can take advantage of the Ozaukee Interurban trail adjacent to Spur 16.
Spur 16 is currently taking reservations and is anticipating a fast lease up. This will be a great place to call home!
