Cafe Corazón expanding to Mequon Public Market, joining Beans & Barley, other restaurants
Cafe Corazón is adding a third location with a restaurant at the new Mequon Public Market — joining other Milwaukee eateries that are expanding there.
Cafe Corazón and the other food and beverage businesses are to open this fall.
Mequon Public Market is under construction at the Spur 16 mixed-use development, north of West Mequon Road between Mequon Town Center and Buntrock Avenue.
Other tenants so far announced for the public market are Beans & Barley restaurant, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. and Purple Door Ice Cream. Also, St. Paul Fish Co. will be in a renovated former industrial building at Spur 16.
Owners George and Wendy Mireles opened their first Café Corazon in 2009 at 3129 N. Bremen St., in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood.
The restaurant initially had just six tables and nine bar seats before expanding to include an enclosed sunroom and outdoor patio.
The couple opened a second Café Corazon in 2016 at 2394 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., in Bay View.
Café Corazon will be one of just a few Mexican restaurants in Mequon, and will seek to differentiate itself as a farm to table establishment with vegan and vegetarian options, according to Wednesday's announcement.
"We are very excited to have been invited to be part of the Mequon Public Market and
believe this project is going to be so great for the community," Wendy Mireles said in a statement.
The public market, 6300 W. Mequon Road, will have around 10 businesses.
Spur 16 will include three three-story apartment buildings, totaling 146 units, and 10 town homes. The housing will be completed by summer 2019.
Spur 16 is being developed by Shaffer Development LLC, and is named for the site's historic railroad spur.
